| Objective: The study was designed to clarify the current situation of social avoidance and distress among the medical undergraduates and to analyze the relevant influencing factors from demographic characteristics and social psychological characteristics,giving the priority order.The study will provide theoretical basis and guidance for the prevention and intervention of social intercourse problems of medical undergraduates and the promotion of their comprehensive development of mental health.Methods: Stratified random cluster sampling method was used to conduct a questionnaire survey on medical undergraduates in China Medical University.Social Avoidance and Distress Scale,Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale,Belief in a Just World Scale and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire were used to evaluate the social avoidance and distress,self-esteem,belief in a just world and coping style among the medical students.A total of 1339 effective responses were obtained,with an effective response rate of 84.85%.Epidata 3.1 was used to input data.The data analysis was performed by SPSS 20.0,SAS 9.2 and Amos 24.0 software.P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.Kappa value was used to test the consistency of qualitative data,and Pearson correlation was used to test the collinearity of quantitative data.The distribution of social avoidance and distress among demographic characteristics and social psychological characteristics was examined by T test,one-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation,and linear regression of General Linear Model(GLM)was used to identify the factors associated with social avoidance and distress.Results: Among 1339 subjects,the score of social avoidance was 5.68±3.55(Mean±SD),the social distress score was 5.78±3.69 and the total score of social avoidance and distress was 11.46±6.73.The results of GLM analysis showed that the factors associated with social avoidance were,in the sequence of β value,self-esteem(β=-0.291,P<0.001),positive coping style(β=-0.169,P<0.001),negative coping style(β=0.103,P<0.001),major(clinical medicine vs.preventive medicine,β=0.087,P=0.004 medical technology and others vs.preventive medicine,β=0.076,P=0.012),belief in a just world(β=-0.078,P=0.007)and gender(male vs.female,β=-0.070,P=0.005);social distress was significantly associated with self-esteem(β=-0.346,P < 0.001),positive coping style(β=-0.146,P<0.001),negative coping style(β=0.096,P<0.001)and grade(grade four and above vs.grade one,β=-0.060,P=0.024);the factors associated with social avoidance and distress were self-esteem(β=-0.330,P < 0.001),positive coping style(β=-0.166,P<0.001),negative coping style(β=0.105,P<0.001),belief in a just world(β=-0.074,P=0.009),major(medical technology and others vs.preventive medicine,β=0.074,P=0.013;clinical medicine vs.preventive medicine,β=0.070,P=0.019)and gender(male vs.female,β=-0.057,P=0.020).Conclusion: This study assessed the current situation of social avoidance and distress and identified its associated factors among the medical undergraduates.The results showed that social avoidance,social distress,social avoidance and distress were in a high level,which indicates that the problem of social avoidance and distress in medical undergraduates was serious.The social psychological factors such as Self-esteem,coping style were the common influencing factors of social avoidance and distress and its two dimensions,and the effects are strong.In addition,belief in a just world,major,grade and gender also have certain influence on each dimension. |
