College community is one of the early and mature communities of mental health service in China.At present,the college community still pays a litte attention on attitude towards mental illness.Mental illness attitude is an individual’s attitude towards mental illness and its patients,which includes three aspects: stigma,stereotype and social distance.Mental illness attitude is an important factor affecting mental health services,and educational means is one of the main methods to improve the negative mental illness attitude.Freshmen are the starting point and key point of college mental health service.Therefore,this study starts with the mental illness attitude of college freshmen,uses the natural experiment method and the questionnaire survey method,collects the data of 16,525 college freshmen before and after experiencing the mental health education course in 13 universities.Furthermore,the intervention effects and service needs of college mental health education courses on mental illness attitudes(stigmatization,stereotype and social distance),mental health knowledge were investigated.The results show that freshmen have a negative attitude towards mental illness,and they also have a more negative attitude towards mental illness.The results of educational intervention showed that the mental illness stigma emotions and stereotypes of freshmen in universities for nationalities were higher than those of freshmen in ordinary universities before and after the intervention of mental health education courses.The intervention effect of mental health education courses in the above two dimensions is lower than that in ordinary colleges and universities.In terms of behavioral tendency of mental illness,the scores of social distance of freshmen of national colleges were lower than those of ordinary colleges before and after the intervention of mental health education course,and the effect of educational intervention was better than that of ordinary colleges.College mental health education in national colleges and universities has an obvious negative effect on the intervention of students’ mental health knowledge and accomplishment,while the courses of mental health education in ordinary colleges and universities have effectively improved students’ mental health knowledge and accomplishment.The new students of different types of colleges and universities all expressed certain needs of mental health service,but the level of needs was not high,and the difference of school types was not significant.On the whole,new college students of different types of colleges and universities all reflect a certain degree of negative attitude towards mental illness,mental health literacy has been improved,but also show a certain need for mental health services;The educational effect of college mental health education in colleges and universities needs to be improved.Based on it study puts forward the corresponding countermeasures and suggestions.First,optimize the content of mental health education courses in colleges and universities;Second,innovate the mental health service mode in colleges and universities;Third,expand the mental health service channels in colleges and universities;Fourth,improve the service facilities and personnel in colleges and universities;Fifth,to increase the understanding of college students to the help-seekers;Sixth,integrate the mental health service resources of the surrounding communities of colleges and universities.
