With the continuous development of bio-psycho-social medical model, the mental health of the elderly is worth studying as well as the physical health of the elderly. The elderly depression is an urgent problem in the psychological problems of the elderly, but there is a lack of effective ways for prevention and treatment. The current research results suggest that dietary prevention and treatment of chronic non communicable diseases is a safe,low-cost and easily accepted method. However, there are few studies on the relationship between diet nutrition and depression in the elderly. In order to provide scientific basis for the follow-up intervention,it was studied the relationship between dietary nutrition and depression in the elderly. Objective:To investigate the relationship between depression and food intake in the elderly, and to provide a feasible dietary pattern for the protection of mental health of the elderly. Methods:Through cluster sampling method, the elderly in Jiangsu Province were selected.A total of 1188 valid samples were included in this survey.According to the revised Chinese dietary balance index(dbi-16),the individual diet was scored;t-test,chi square analysis and logistic regression were used to analyze the differences of various food intakes and food types between the two groups(depression group and control group);multiple regression model was used to analyze the relationship between depression and dietary pattern after adjusting a variety of confounding factors. Results: 1.In this survey, the depression rate of the elderly was 24.41%.2.In the general population, protective factors for depression in the elderly were vegetables(OR = 0.63;95% CI: 0.57-0.69),fruits(OR= 0.80;95% CI: 0.73-0.88),food diversity(OR=0.69;95% CI: 0.60-0.80)and dietary pattern A(OR= 0.06;95% CI: 0.03-0.12);the risk factor for depression in the elderly was poultry/meat(OR=1.39;95%CI:1.24-1.56).3.Protective factors for depression in male elderly were vegetables(OR=0.70;95%CI: 0.62-0.80),fruits(OR=0.79;95%CI: 0.70-0.90),food variety(OR=0.70;95%CI: 0.58-0.84)and dietary pattern A(OR=0.01;95%CI : 0.01-0.23),while poultry/meat(OR=1.42;95%CI:1.22-1.65)was the risk factor for depression in male elderly.4.Protective factors for female elderly depression were vegetables(OR=0.55;95%CI:0.48-0.64),fruits(OR=0.81;95%CI:0.72-0.93),soybeans(OR=0.83;95% CI:0.72-0.96),food variety(OR=0.67;95% CI: 0.55-0.84)and dietary pattern A(OR=0.16;95%CI:0.08-0.29),while poultry/meat(OR=1.35;95%CI:1.13-1.62)was the risk factor for depression in female elderly. Conclusion: Vegetables, fruits, food diversity and dietary pattern A are the protective factors of depression in the elderly while the poultry/meat is the risk factor of depression in the elderly. However, there are differences in the protective factors and risk factors of depression between men and women.
