One of the great charms of sports is the beauty of dynamic,which makes the means of film and television become an important means of sports communication by virtue of its capturing and showing dynamic.However,at present,the sports communication by film and television means is quite weak,and the traditional means of film and television presents the disadvantage that sports give way to the main characters’ love stories and actors’ sports expressiveness.At the same time,the current theme of animation made for infants can not meet the needs of the the broad animation market and audience,and thinking about the integration of sports and animation should be our new breakthrough.Sports animation is not a new concept,but at present,there are few excellent domestic sports animation works,which are paid low attention by people.The development of sports animation needs to learn from successful experience.The excellent Japanese sports animation works,represented by Slam Dunk,Captain Tsubasa and Touch,not only enrich the growth period of generations of young people,but also enable the seeds of sports to take root and sprout,becoming an enlightenment of sports love.At present,there is a large gap in the research of this aspect and it has high use value.Based on the analysis of image data,this paper combines the examples of "Slam Dunk" and "Feel the Wind",and adopts methodologies of literature analysis,case analysis,text analysis and content analysis.Supported by Pierce’s theory of sign types and icons,this paper explores the use of character signs,reproduction signs,identification signs,symbols,gender symbols in Japanese sports animation from the perspective of visual semiotics.From the "Slam Dunk" popular in the 1990 s to the emerging power of "Feel the Wind" in the 2010 s,the paper explores the changes in the use of icons in Japanese sports animation over the past 20 years and the social reasons behind them longitudinally.The paper summarizes why Japanese sports animation can deeply participate in Japanese society for sports communication and Japanese cultural communication.It is concluded that Japanese sports animation has the following icons: character sign selection preferences for teenagers;reproduction of signs,identification signs,and symbol progressive in layers,emphasizing the sense of interaction with reality;spreading cultural signs to deepen the meaning space.Besides,the changes in Japanese sports animation are exactly the changes in post-war Japanese social mentality and sports mentality: from imitating and chasing others to self-reliance and surpassing itself,showing the big picture of Japanese sports society over the past two decades.Finally,the paper provides feasible advice for the creation of domestic sports animation by comparing the development of Japanese sports animation with the current difficulties and advantages of domestic sports animation.
