| Tribe:On Homecoming and Belonging by American war reporter Sebastian Junger is written in a detached and precise style and a fluent language.This book depicts deeply the tremendous pain of post-traumatic stress disorder suffered by soldiers,the sin of war and the isolation among people.The goal of the translation practice is to accurately convey the meaning and to produce the same effect on the Chinese readers as is produced by the original on the source language readers.Therefore,this translation is under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory and this report elaborates how the communicative effect can be guaranteed through translation strategies like conversion and innovation.This report is divided into five parts.Part One briefly introduces the background and the significance of the translation task as well as the original author and the excerpt.Part Two describes the whole translation process,including the preparation before the translation,expression in translation and proofreading after translation.Part Three introduces Newmark’s communicative translation theory,including the definition and applicability of communicative translation theory and semantic translation and the differences between them.Part Four is an in-depth analysis of the the difficulties encountered in the translation process and proposes some translation strategies,including the use of Chinese four-character idiom,annotation,conversion and amplification at the lexical level,division,inversion and turning phrases into clauses at the syntactic level and the use of modal particle and repetition at the discourse level and discusses several with a number of cases.Part Five makes a summary about the translation practice.The translation practice demonstrates that the readability of Tribe can be ensured and the communicative effect can be better realized under the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory. |
