In recent years, tourism industry has developed rapidly in our country. As a famous historical and cultural city,Yangzhou attracts more and more foreign travelers.Tourist text is not only an important way for tourists to acquire tourist information, but a great channel to learn about local culture and Chinese culture. It has been found that the translation of Yangzhou tourist texts is improving with introductions in some scenic spots updated. However, there are still many translation problems which will cause misunderstanding for foreigners and even hinder the publicity of Chinese culture. In view of this, the thesis makes a research on Chinese-English translation of tourist texts in Yangzhou city under the guidance of Eco-translatology to advance its translation quality.Based on a detailed analysis of a large number of bilingual texts from major tourist attractions in Yangzhou. This thesis studies translator’s multi-dimensional adaptation and selection in the process of translation with qualitative analysis and case analysis methods.Firstly,it presents the translational eco-environment from the following three aspects:basic features and functions of tourist text, linguistic differences between Chinese and English tourist texts, and the target readers.Secondly,it analyzes the translator’s adaptive selection on linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions respectively and puts forward suggested translation methods or techniques for improper translations. Finally, the author does an evaluation on English translation of Yangzhou tourist texts according to the three evaluation criteria in Eco-translatology.Generally speaking, the degree of holistic adaptation and selection in the translation of Yangzhou tourist texts is not very high.Through the analysis of numerous translation cases, the author concludes that,in Chinese-English tourist-text translation, translators should grasp the communicative intentions of the original texts and keep translational eco-environment in mind to realize adaptive transformations on linguistic, cultural and communicative dimensions. On linguistic dimension, translators should use literal translation to transfer the information of the original texts at lexical, syntactic and discourse levels so as to adapt to the ecology of the target language; On cultural dimension, translators should have a good knowledge of the two cultures and tries their best to retain the cultural connotations in original text when adapting to the cultural environment of the target language.Translators can compensate cultural losses by means of addition, transliteration plus annotation; On communicative dimension, translators should delete redundant information with the translation method of omission to make translated texts meet the needs of target readers and achieve communicative intentions. The author hopes that her research on the translation quality of the tourist texts in one city can contribute to the development of Chinese tourism and the spread of Chinese culture.
