Mr.Jones, created by American writer Edith Wharton(1862-1937),is included in her story collection called The Ghost Stories of Edith Wharton. In her more than 50 years of writing, she produces numerous excellent works, among which her ghost stories play a unique and vital role. However, the domestic study on her ghost stories and their translations is relatively lacking"Three elements"--environment,characters and plots are basic characteristics of the novel and make of the particular literary form.In the novel, the environment can be seen as its setting, the characters as the core of the novel and the plots as its skeleton. In the ghost stories of Edith Wharton, the descriptions of the environment can create mystery, terror and suspense.A large number of descriptions of dialogues, appearances and actions and psychological activities can flexibly and directly shape the characters, and also fully expose their inner world to the readers. What’s more, the plot of the novel is rather thrilling and uncanny. The language styles of Edith Wharton’s ghost stories are rather unique, which can be shown from their delicate and meticulous descriptions of environment, characters and plotsOne of the crucial tasks of this report is how to reproduce the unique language style to target readers through the translation of the descriptions about the horrible and mysterious atmosphere, the characters with different personalities and the grotesque and thrilling plots.Based on the framework of "three elements",the writer of this report intends to reproduce the unique and delicate language style of Wharton in Mr.Jones from the perspectives of the choice of words, figures of speech, sentence structures and so on.Under the guidance of Gutt’s Translation and Relevance Theory, the writer of this report applies direct translation and indirect translation methods to solve the difficulties during the translation process.Under the framework of direct and indirect translation, many specific translation skills are applied such as the flexible use of modal particles, additions and conversions to help target readers to achieve the contextual effects with minimal processing effort. As for the plot construction, the writer of this report analyzes several typical sentences which play a vital role in the development, climax and ending of the story.
