Analysis Of Interpretation Quality In Light Of Functional Equivalence

This thesis is a practice report of C-E and E-C interpreting practice which is performed in a negotiation conference between North Minzu University and Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.The paper aims to give an introduction of this interpretation task,meanwhile analyzing some difficulties,merits and demerits of the interpretation practice,hoping to provide valuable reference to those scholars and practitioners who are engaged in the translation field.This report consists of five parts:task description,functional equivalence,literature review,case analysis and conclusion.The author firstly describes the significance of the conference and this interpreting practice,then demonstrates the whole interpretation process which includes study of terms,investigation of background information,on-site interpretation,summarize of difficulties and review of the translation script.Chapter Ⅱ is the literature review.As is known that the theory of functional equivalence has prominent status in the field of translation,the author then comprehensively studies and sums up both foreign and domestic literature that study the relationship between conference interpretation and functional equivalence.Chapter Ⅲ is the theoretical foundation of the thesis.The author makes an elaborate statement regarding the theory of functional equivalence.Chapter Ⅳ is the case analysis,which specifies the two main obstacles in this interpreting practice including accuracy of term interpreting and treatment of complex sentences.In the meantime,the author explores the merits and demerits of the interpreting practice by combining with the analysis of TT and ST,moreover,some of the critical mistakes are also studied.At last the author summarizes the whole interpreting practice,analyzing it from the perspective of professional quality and work attitude.He again emphasizes the importance of the fuctional equivalence in his conclusion.
