A Report On E-c Translation Of Popular Science Texts

With the public pursuit of scientific methods and knowledge in different specialized fields,popular science texts are flourishing due to their rigorous and professional content,easy-to-understand language,and entertaining effects,and translation of this genre is also thriving.This article,taking the E-C translation practice of the popular science book Fitness and Wellness: A Way of Life as an example,aims to explore the translation of vague expressions,sentences with complex structure and metaphors and provide targeted translation strategies.Under the guidance of Newmark’s communicative translation theory,this article analyzes the general standards of popular science translation by comparing linguistic differences between Chinese and English.For the translation of vague expressions,the translator employs strategies of literal translation and omission to make the target text more readable;for complex sentences translation,strategies of restructuring and dividing are found to be effective in minimizing structural differences of two languages;for translating metaphors,the translator tends to replace the metaphor with a simile or supplement it with an additional explanation.When translating popular science texts,the readability of the target text and readers’ acceptability should be fully considered on the basis of accurately conveying scientific knowledge,so as to achieve the purpose of communicative translation.Faced with various translation problems,translators should boldly adopt various target text oriented strategies to conform the translation to the convention of the target language,so as to achieve the objective of transmitting scientific knowledge.
