| As we all know,the society in the 21st century is a knowledge-based society which emphasises the importance of soft power.To increase language skills and intercultural understanding,children learning foreign language(FL)at younger ages has been a feature of the global tendency over recent years.With the rapid development of Chinese economy,more and more Chinese parents are willing to spend money on foreign language learning of their children.However,there are just a few academic books studying on the effectiveness of early language learning and teaching in Chinese markets,thus,it is of great significance to translate foreign ones into Chinese.This thesis is a translation practice report based on an English book Early Language Learning in Europe(ELLi E).This book introduces that Europe set up a three-year transnational,longitudinal project,ELLi E,drawing on hard evidence from over1400 children,seven countries,to explore the relevant factors involving in the early FLL,thus providing valuable insights to policy-makers and education experts.The source texts of this translation practice report chosen by the translator are Chapter one and Chapter three;Chapter one introduces the specific policy carrying out in the seven countries:England,Italy,Netherlands,Poland,Spain and Sweden,together with Croatia;Chapter three describes what role the school context plays in making early language learning successful.According to Newmark’s text typology theory as well as his communicative and semantic translation methods,the author concludes that the source text belongs to academic report with the feature of expressive function.As far as the translator is concerned,it would be more suitable to adopt semantic translation to guide this translation work.On the one hand,it can convey accurately the author’s attitude and meaning;on the other hand,it can make the target text more readable and acceptable so as to narrow the gap between the second readers.In the case study,the translator discussed the major difficulties at two levels,namely lexical level and syntactic level.Furthermore,other general translation methods are also adopted in the analyzing part,such as addition,conversion,adjusting sentence order,change of voice,and division.By and large,this translation project is of great significance in text typology theory on the aspect of E-C academic text translation,for promoting the academic exchange between China and the West and providing many latest findings to domestic education area. |
