The source text of this translation project is an excerpt from the book The AI Does Not Hate You,ranging from the second chapter to the seventh chapter. This book introduces AI(artificial intelligence)from the perspective of rationalists and suggests people treat AI rationally.Chinese readers can know the latest technology and understand AI deeply by reading these six chapters. The source text is an informative text which focuses on the accuracy of information transmission and on the acceptance and response of the target readers, which are in line with Nida’s functional equivalence theory. Therefore, the translator took Nida’s functional equivalence theory as the theoretical support. In this project, the translator mainly analyzed the difficulties on the lexical, syntactic and textual levels and proposed corresponding solutions with some cases according to the features of the source text. The difficulties are manifested in the rendering of terminologies and neologisms as well as passive sentences and complex sentences, and in pursuing textual cohesion. The translator adopted such translation methods as linear translation, inserting, restructuring to address these difficulties and achieve functional equivalence. This report consists of five chapters.Chapter One introduces the background and significance of this report.Chapter Two analyzes the contents and features of the source text.Chapter Three illustrates the preparation and the guiding theory-Nida’s functional equivalence theory.Chapter Four puts stress on analyzing the difficulties that the translator encountered in the translation process and how to deal with these difficulties with the help of functional equivalence theory.Chapter Five summaries the experience and shortcomings in the translation process. The translator aims to provide some reference for translators engaging in AI texts translation and provide Chinese readers with an opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of AI.
