A Practice Study Report On E-C Translation Of Essays(Excerpts)of Helen Snow

This translation study report is based on the translation practice of essays(Excerpts)by Helen Foster Snow,so called Book Reports by An Wei under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence.The essays,as book report text,mainly includes the introduction of several literary works,the anecdotes of characters and Helen Snow’s personal comments,featuring literariness and realism.The purpose of this report is to explore the linguistic features of Book Reports and the strategies and methods used to deal with the difficulties in such text translation practice,which is of great value for the translation studies of the same genre.Under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence,the translator tries to explore the closet and natural equivalence in target language to reproduce the message carried by that in source language.This practice report aims to summarize the methods and translation techniques of literary texts from the perspectives of lexical,syntactical and textual levels by illustrating numbers of examples with detailed analysis.Meanwhile,it is hoped that readers will pay attention to the unpublished works of Helen Snow,which is of practical significance for the comprehensive study of the writer.During the process,the translation strategies of literary texts at three aspects are summarized as follows: at the lexical level,there are plenty of the books’ names being adopted by the fixed version translation method and literal translation with annotations;proper nouns can be translated by comparing different versions of translation in the way of fixed version translation and transliteration with annotations;culture-loaded word is often translated by literal translation with annotations.At the syntactical level,the passive voice in the literary text should be analyzed first and then can be translated by the way of changing into active voice;in terms of long and complex sentence,translation methods such as word order and voice conversion are essential for catering to native speakers;literal and free translation skills with annotations are often applied in sentence with rhetoric figures to enhance the acceptability and readability.At the textual level,the coherence and integrity should be highlighted for achieving the fluency of the text.
