Speaking and writing are considered as important output skills in foreign language learning because they can reflect students’ language competences.For college students,oral English and writing competences are closely related to their future career as well as learning.Both aspects of oral English and writing complement each other in the process of foreign language learning.Also they can reflect the effectiveness of foreign language teaching.This empirical study is basically the application of Production-oriented Approach in oral and written English teaching.In the context of foreign language teaching with Chinese characteristics,the Production-oriented Approach forms a pedagogic system,which has attracted extensive attention in the field of foreign language teaching.Its teaching hypotheses:output-driven,input-enabled,and selective learning hypotheses,as well as teaching procedures: motivating,enabling,and assessing,have attracted the attention from domestic scholars,also have been studied and gradually developed.This paper mainly studied the impact of Production-oriented Approach on College English writing and oral English teaching and whether it was effective in the application of spoken English and the output of writing proficiency.At the same time,students’ attitudes toward the Production-oriented Approach were also investigated.In this empirical study,the POA experimental teaching was designed for 12 weeks.The subjects were 60 students majoring in Broadcasting and Directing from the School of Journalism and Communication,Xi’an International Studies University,including 30 students in the experimental class and 30 in the control class.Both classes were under the guidance by the same teacher.The pre-and post-tests were used in the study,also the form of questionnaire,interview were adopted.Data results were processed by SPSS.The study found that through the weeks of teaching experiment,students from both two classes had improved their comprehensive scores in aspects of oral English and writing.The post-test scores showed that the experimental class weresignificantly higher than that of the control class.Moreover in the POA experimental class,post-test scores of students from the medium as well as the low level group enhance significantly than those in the high level group.It illustrated that the Production-oriented Approach had a positive impact on improving the overall level of students’ oral English and English writing.The results of the questionnaire showed that the Production-oriented approach had a positive impact on students’ general output quality of English speaking and writing,for example,the fluency and coherence of oral English,as well as the richness of writing contents.Furthermore,POA can effectively stimulate students’ initiative in English learning to improve learning efficiency.This empirical study was an preliminary attempt to study the effectiveness of the Production-oriented Approach in oral English and English writing classes.Hoping that this study can provide an effective basis for research methods and curriculum content based on localized English teaching in China.
