A Report On The Translation Of The News Of University News Website From The Perspective Of Peter Newmark’s Translation Theory

With the promotion of China’s international status and influence,an increasing number of foreign students are coming to China to further their studies.In addition,China is also accelerating the construction of world-class universities.Therefore,in order to keep pace with the times and speed up its internationalization,colleges and universities have set up their own English websites which feature not only the introductions of their majors,schools,and history,but also relevant important news,such as academic conferences,speeches of famed scholars and campus life.It is highly important to ensure high quality of English translation of the website news.It helps,on one hand,international readers have comprehensive understanding of the Chinese colleges and universities,on the other,improve international fame and influence of those colleges and universities.This paper is a practice report on C-E news translation.The news from Tianjin University official website is selected as the translation material.According to Peter Newmark’s theory,the writer is clear that news is of informative text,thus communicative translation theory should be adopted in news translation.Communicative translation focuses on readers of target languages.Accordingly,translation takes target language,culture and pragmatic habits into consideration,so that it can be clear,coherent and caters to target readers.Four parts are included in this report: the first part is about translation task description and task background;the second part elaborates on the preparation of translation,the translating process,and proofreading;the third part consists of theory introduction and translation case analysis.By taking the features of news into consideration and adopting communicative translation and semantic translation techniques,the translation cases are analyzed in three aspects: title,lead,and body.In the aspect of title,the analysis is based on the adoption and omission of words,as well as changes of tense.For the aspect of Chinese news lead,three methods as information rearrangement,redundant information removal and time specificity are applied to make the news lead appropriate and clear.As to the news body,addition,conversion and omission are used to make the translation natural and easy to understand.The fourth part is the summary.The writer sums up her strengths,weaknesses,and future expectations.
