A Report On The Translation Of Chapters Three And Four Of Sociology And Human Rights: A Bill Of Rights For The Twenty-first Century

This is a report on the English to Chinese translation of Chapters Three and Four of the book Sociology and Human Rights: the Bill of Rights for the Twenty-first Century,which focus on three important human rights,i.e.,economic and social rights and cultural rights,especially on how to protect these rights in the contemporary world.During the translation process,the translator realized that the translation of terminology and complex sentences is highly challenging as some special terms and expressions in English either do not have ready and established equivalents in Chinese,or may have more than one translations in Chinese,and it is often difficult to translate complex sentences into fluent and stylistically genuine Chinese.In order to ensure the correct translation of terminology,proper rendition of complex sentences,and ultimately ensure that the translation will be logical and coherent,the author of the translation report analyzed the background and linguistic features of the Source Text.In addition,under the guidance of the Functional Equivalence Theory,the author of the translation report explores three methods in translating terminologies,namely,literal translation,literal translation with annotation and liberal translation,and three techniques in translating complex sentences,namely,linear translation,division,and conversion,so as to ensure the accuracy and acceptability of the translation,and the functional equivalence between the Source Text and the Target Text.
