The English-Chinese Translation Of The Routledge Handbook Of Language Revitalization(Section 1.1) And The Translation Report

This paper is composed of three parts,including the source text of Section 1.1 of The Routledge Handbook of Language Revitalization,the target text and a report on the translation.The book was published in2018 by Routledge,a world-renowned and professional publishing agency.This section includes one introduction and 4 pieces of theses.Moreover,in order to put the language revitalization into practice,the source text mainly elaborates certain issues related to languages as well as the feasible methods and strategies in four aspects pertaining to language and wellness,language rights,community-based language planning,and language policy and planning.Meanwhile,this translation report is devoted to analyzing some translation cases of the translated text by combining Peter Newmark’s Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation.Translation report analyzes the types and characteristics of the source text.This report also points out the difficulties in the process of translation.In the source text,some technical terms and foreign words pose great challenges to the translator’s translation task.By analyzing the source text types and combining the corresponding translation strategies and skills,with examples,the translator illustrates how to use Semantic and Communicative Translation to guide translation practice.Specific translation strategies include transliteration,literal translation and liberaltranslation,abridgement,adaptation and interpretation.The case studies are made in three aspects.Finally,the findings and shortcomings of the translation practice are summarized.The author selects the Section 1.1 for translation report so as to help relevant professionals or researchers go further into the language revitalization.Besides,the language revitalization of Minority languages is capable of motivating the advantages of system and mechanism of Minority traditions and culture.Therefore,the translation text has great significance to the development of language protection in Guizhou province,one of the typically multiethnic areas for multifarious languages and traditions.
