In response to the sharp reform of the society caused by the rapid development of information technology,countries all over the world are devoting themselves to researching and figuring out how to cultivate the new generation in order to prepare them for the unpredictable future.In China,the term "key competency" came into our vision in 2014,and the cultivation of students’ key competency was demanded as an important part of deepening the curriculum reform.The overall structure of the cultivation of key competencies was issued in 2016.Since then,key competencies have been a heated topic in education.And soon in 2017,English Subject Key Competencies were issued through The Revised English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School Students.This version of the curriculum standards offers the relevant definitions as well as the implementation suggestions of cultivating students’ key competencies in English classes,among which,it clearly points out that the approach of teaching English grammar in senior high school is based on the three-dimensional framework and concept.Three-dimensional grammar teaching is a way and concept put forward by Larsen Freeman.She advocates that grammar teaching should be instructed in three aspects—form,meaning and use of grammar,which is followed by a large numbers of teachers.In addition,Larsen Freeman coined the word "grammaring",referring to the ability of using grammar.She attaches great importance to grammaring.This concept,coincidentally stays in perfect in line with the concept of cultivating key competencies.On top of all these,how should we apply three-dimensional grammar teaching theory into senior high school English grammar classes?A great number of scholars and teachers have made their attempts and studies.However,the effective model is still under discussion and practice.On the basis of the summary of previous related researches as well as my grammar teaching experience,this thesis proposes the model of teaching grammar based on the cultivation of key competencies in senior high school.But is the model useful?What is the students’ attitude to the grammar classes using this model?These are the two research questions of the thesis.The thesis summarizes the studies on the theory of three-dimensional grammar and its application in English teaching.Based on the previous studies,the model of applying three-dimensional grammar teaching theory into senior high school is proposed.To test the effectiveness of the model,the author designs research questions in Chapter Three,and chooses two classes in NO.X Middle School in Zhengzhou as the research subjects,and then take attributive clause as the grammar item to instruct students in different classes.After making sure the students in the Control Group and the Experiment group are at the same level by analyzing the data of their monthly exams,the same pre-test and post-test are designed and arranged before and after the instruction of attributive clause.The P-value for the pre-test is 0.9786(P=0.9789>0.05)while the P-value for the post-test is 0.48787(P=0.48787<0.05).Besides,the average score of the post-test for the Experiment Group is much better that that of the Control Group,despite the fact that the two groups did better than in the pre-test.That is to say,with the almost same level of English and attributive clause,the two groups have different performances in the post-test,and the Experiment Group has better performance.Therefore,we can draw the conclusion that and limitations of the research are presented.And the results of the questionnaire suggest that students are in favor of the three-dimensional grammar teaching approach based on the cultivation of key competencies.There exists some significance of the research and it also provides a possible and effective way to teach grammar in the background of cultivating students’ key competencies.However,the subjects of the research are so limited that it still remains to be tested in a broader range,and this,deserves further study.The feedback of the questionnaire also offers some suggestions to grammar teaching in senior school.
