Grammar is an indispensable part of English language learning.In the background of exam-oriented education,the traditional teaching method has played an important role in grammar teaching for a long time,but the teaching efficiency is unsatisfactory.Larsen-Freeman proposes the three-dimensional grammar theory which has attracted wide attention.Compared with traditional grammar teaching,the three-dimensional grammar teaching emphasizes that grammar has three inseparable dimensions,namely form,meaning and use,and attaches importance to the cultivation of comprehensive ability of using grammar.Therefore,taking the attributive clause as an example,this thesis applies the three-dimensional grammar theory to English grammar teaching in senior high schools,which aims to test the effectiveness of this grammar teaching approach and investigate students' attitudes toward grammar learning and the three-dimensional grammar theory.The study was conducted with 98 students in Grade One of a senior high school in Huangshan,and lasted for two months.Class Seven was the experimental class and Class Eight was the control class.In the process of the experiment,students in Class Seven attended grammar classes taught by the three-dimensional grammar theory,while students in Class Eight were taught by the traditional method.There was a pre-test and a post-test for students in the two classes,and a questionnaire survey for the experimental class.All the data collected were analyzed with SPSS 13.0.The results of the questionnaire and tests prove that the grammar teaching based on the three-dimensional grammar theory has advantages over the traditional grammar teaching as it can help students improve their grammar ability,especially the practical use of grammar.In addition,sizeable majority students hold that grammar learning is of vital importance and show positive attitudes toward the three-dimensional grammar teaching.In general,the application of the three-dimensional grammar theory can contribute to students' acquisition of the form,meaning and use of the attributive clause.
