A Report On The E-C Translation Of Operation Manual For Hydraulic Turbine

This paper is a translation practice report based on the translator’s completion of the E-C translation task of Operation Manual for Hydraulic Turbine.The translator completed the E-C translation of the four chapters 3.8 to 3.11 in Operation Manual for Hydraulic Turbine in the Linguist Translation Services in September 2018.The source text is about 30,000 words,and the target text is about 60,000 words.The text mainly includes the guaranteed performance of the turbine,the reference standard,the working range,the running water level,and the simulation experiment of the turbine.Guided by Skopos Theory,this report analyzes the difficulties in the translation process and proposes corresponding translation methods and techniques through specific cases.Skopos Theory discusses the translation based on the source text.The core concept of Skopos Theory includes three rules,namely the skopos rule,coherence rule,and fidelity rule.Skopos rule states that the translation is determined by its purpose.In other words,the priority rule for any translation is the Skopos rule,which means that a translation action is determined by its Skopos.The coherence rule means the Target Text must conform to the coherence standard,which means readability and acceptability are the two main characteristics of target text and target text should make sure that the target receiver understands target language culture.The fidelity rule links to coherence between source text and target text.In other words,the Target Text must be loyal to its corresponding Source Text in the level of features,styles,and functions.In the process of E-C translation of Operation Manual for Hydraulic Turbine,the translator had difficulty in translating technical terms,passive voice sentences,and long and difficult sentences.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the translator has adopted corresponding solutions to translate technical terms,passive voice sentences,and long and difficult sentences in the source text.Firstly,the translator utilizes diction to translate technical terms,so as to achieve the accurate translation of technical terms.Secondly,the translator adopts such translation techniques as linear translation and conversion to translate English passive voice sentences,so as to achieve the purpose of the faithful and coherent translation.Thirdly,the translator utilizes such translation techniques as inversion,division,and reconstruction to translate long and difficult sentences,to achieve the purpose of coherent and faithful translation.Under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the translator has resolved many problems in the translation process,completed the translation task,and provided a good service to the client.This report can serve as a reference for translators of scientific and technological texts.
