A Report On The Simultaneous Interpreting Of “The Social Security Development Since The Founding Of New China” From The Perspective Of Interpretative Theory

The Material was chosen from the lecture The Social Security Development Since the Founding of New China that given by professor Jiao Peixin.For the interpreter who conduct the practice,it’s difficult: First,there are many political and economic words as well as many Chinese cultural words with features in the material so that the interpreter needs to be flexible to interpret;Second,the time that the speaker referred spanned for 70 years,from 1949 to the present,so the interpreter was demanded to change tense in time,which was relatively difficult;Third,the speaker tended to rattle off a brunch of numbers within a short time,which increased the difficulty;Forth,the sentence given by the speaker was scattered,so it is difficult for the interpreter to integrate into long logical sentences.The report is under the guidance of interpretative theory.Interpretative theory originated in 1960’s.It believes that interpreting is not just transformation between two languages,but a process of understanding the meaning of the source language completely and expressing correctly through the target language.The interpreter expounds in the report its generation,development,main points,and interpreting process and also extends the main interpreting process as the following:information-receiving,cognitive complement,logical understanding,deverbalization and reformulation.Given that the speaker refers to multiple Chinese cultural words,the interpreters needs to use cognitive complement to dig the meaning behind;And because the sentences in the material are short and scattered,the interpreter can not follow the speaker’s logical structure to avoid the bad interpreting results but use English logic understanding to rebuild structure.The author concludes after analyzing that the essence of interpreting lies in expressing “meaning”,which is the major task for interpreters in the interpreting process.In that process,interpreters can neither adopt the methods of word for word nor blindly follow the speakers under their structure.The correct way is to express the meaning of source language based on understanding and reserving the connotation.If the interpreters want to get the connotation behind,it is required to combine their cognition,background and information and context instead of only get from exterior words and sentences.The interpreter has gained experience through writing the report.The interpreter will keep a solid mental state in future practices,getting rid of nervousness and fear.In addition,the interpreter knows that only persistent learning and abundant practices can make her become an excellent interpreter.
