A Report On The Chinese Translation Of The CNN News Commentaries On The Relationship Between COVID-19 Epidemic And Climate Change

With its sudden outbreak and rapid spread,COVID-19 has had serious negative impacts worldwide.The epidemic has reduced the world economy and energy demand,prompting many countries to re-think about the direction and paths of energy transformation.Much more attention has been paid to climate change.Accordingly,the issue has also been concerned by the internationally influential news networks.CNN is one of the most influential media in the field of international news communication.Therefore,by analyzing the relevant reports of CNN,we can understand the attitude of western countries and the relevant strategies to solve problems.The translator selected ten reports with no official translations published on CNN website,which all focused on the relationship between the COVID-19 and climate change.As news translation has its own characteristics,the translator has a greater degree of freedom in news translation,and the essence of communicative translation method is free translation and moderate recreation.Therefore,guided by Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory,this paper analyzes and summarizes the problems and solutions in the process of translation.The problems include the improper translation of common words and phrases,the redundancy in title translation and the over-focus on the original sentence structures.The corresponding solutions are the determination of the meanings of the common words and phrases according to context,the editing of the title according to the Chinese writing features and the adjustment of the translation to meet the target readers’ expectations.By doing this translation,the translator aims to consider how to use communicative translation method flexibly in combination with cultural background and readers’ reading habits,so as to summarize the factors influencing the choice of translation strategies for news commentary.Hopefully,this thesis may also be helpful for the relevant news commentary translation.At the same time,translators also realize that she should further enrich her theoretical knowledge of translation,improve her search ability and constantly expand knowledge reserves.
