As an indispensable part of English teaching,English reading teaching is vital for language learning,it is not only significant to the learning of language knowledge,but also key to the development of other areas of skills.Therefore,an increasingly more attention is given to English reading teaching.However,there still exist many problems in the teaching of English reading in senior high schools currently.It’s a challenging task to overcome and solve the problems that emerge in the teaching process.Hence,it’s necessary for English teachers to experiment on new teaching approaches in the teaching of English reading.The thesis attempts to apply extensive reading approach to the teaching of reading as a supplement to the traditional approach.The extensive reading approach derives from the 1960 s,its theoretical frameworks are Input Hypothesis and Affective Filter Hypothesis.It shifts its emphasis from language knowledge to general understanding of the reading materials.In this thesis,Net-paper-based extensive reading approach is implemented to second-year senior high school students,so as to stimulate their interest,enhance their motivation in English reading,and improve their comprehensive reading ability.This research intends to solve the following three questions:1.To what extent can net-paper-based extensive reading approach improve the reading speed of senior high school students ?2.To what extent can net-paper-based extensive reading approach enhance reading comprehension ability of senior high school students?3.To what extent can net-paper-based extensive reading approach boost the reading motivation of senior high school students?This research is carried out among second-year senior high school students from No.3 senior high school in Jianchang County,Liaoning province,and it lasts for 18 weeks.There are 170 participants involved in this research,among them,58 students are in experimental class one,and 57 students are in experimental class two,the other 55 students are in control class.The approach applied to the experimental class one is extracurricular extensive reading tasks plus teacher instruction,extracurricular extensive reading tasks without teacher instruction is adopted in experimental class two,while control class received neither teacher instruction nor extracurricular extensive reading tasks apart from regular EFL classroom instruction.The results of this experiment manifest that the extensive reading approach has beneficial effects on the improvement of students’ reading ability.It can not only improve the overall reading ability but also can arouse the interest of the students and enhance their reading motivation to a great extent.
