The General High School English Curriculum Standard(2017 Edition)focuses on the growth of the core competence of English subject,and advocates teachers to implement English curriculum based on activity-based approach to English learning,so as to availably enhance students’ competence.English reading is a principal way for students to obtain information,learn English and cultivate their sentiment.However,the current reading teaching cannot fully develop their learning ability and thinking capacity.Therefore,it is significant to investigate the influence of reading teaching on high school students’ English reading ability based on the approach.The research questions are as follows.(1)What is the influence of reading teaching on high school students’ reading comprehension based on the activity-based approach to English learning?(2)What is the influence of reading teaching on high school students’ reading strategies based on the activity-based approach to English learning?(3)What is the influence of reading teaching on high school students’ reading motivation based on the activity-based approach to English learning?The author takes 98 students from two parallel classes(both are key classes in this school)in the first grade of a key high school in Nanning as the research participants,and conducts a two-month teaching experiment.The reading teaching of the experimental class is based on the activity-based approach to English learning,while the control class received traditional teaching.They all need to accept six units of reading teaching,using Book 1 and Book 2 from Senior English for China published by People’s Education Press as teaching materials.This study adopts classroom observation,reading comprehension test,questionnaire and interview as research tools to investigate the reading teaching situation of the class.It is found that the students’ reading comprehension ability has improved,their frequency of using English reading strategies has increased,and their motivation for English reading has also risen after half a semester of reading teaching based on the activity-based approach to English learning.And there was no significant difference in English reading achievement,motivation and strategy in the control class.Based on the above results,this study offers the following suggestions for English teachers.(1)The teachers should design the reading teaching aims based on the activity-based approach and focusing on the core competence.(2)The reading teaching process should focus on the theme and rely on the discourse.(3)The teachers should interpret the text deeply and improve their ability of discourse analysis.(4)The teachers should re-examine the purpose of education,correctly understand critical thinking,and cultivate students’ learning ability and critical thinking.
