Due to the defects of examination-oriented education and the limitation of other conditions,oral English teaching has always been regarded as a relatively weak part in English teaching in China,especially in some remote rural areas.The development of foreign language education in rural areas is progressing,but there still exists a big gap with the advanced coastal areas due to the lack of teaching resources and the acceleration of urbanization.The current English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2017 Edition)requires more and more oral skills,expecting junior middle school students to communicate in English in familiar topics,simple role-playing,tell short stories,recite some poems and ballads,sing some English songs,etc.So how to cultivate students’ oral English skills deserves attention and exploration.English songs have the characteristics of cheerful rhythm,simple language and catchy words.Some studies have shown that the application of English songs to English classroom learning can increase students’ learning interest and improve students’ comprehensive English competence.In view of the current English learning situation of rural junior middle school students,and based on the grading goals and requirements for English songs teaching in the English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2017 Edition),this study focuses on how to use English songs to help junior middle school students to improve their oral English and cultivate their interest of learning English.Making full use of these English songs can help students improve their pronunciation and intonation,stimulate their motivation for English learning,adjust the classroom atmosphere and promote English teaching.Through teaching experiments,the author tries to verify the two hypotheses by integrating English songs into oral English teaching in junior middle school:(1)Students’ interest toward English learning could be increased through English songs teaching on English speaking teaching.(2)Students’ English speaking ability could be enhanced through English songs teaching.The author took two regular classes in Grade Seven from a junior middle school in a District in Langshan Town,Linhe City,Bayannur City of Inner Mongolia Autonomous region as experimental subjects,and there are 30 students in experimental class and 32 in controlled class.During the whole teaching process in this experiment,the control class adopts the traditional teaching method,the experimental class adopts the song teaching method for the whole semester,several English songs are selected as a part of teaching,and a variety of activities are designed according to these English songs so as to consolidate and strengthen what students have learned.Within nearly four months,the experiment adopts questionnaires,English speaking tests and interviews etc.And the data and results are analyzed by using SPSS 26.0.According to the analysis of the experimental results,it is found that the application of English songs on the English speaking teaching is helpful for students to learn English.They can stimulate students’ interest in learning English,this is manifested in the analysis of interest questionnaire,students’ interest is improved in learning attitude,classroom learning behavior,after-class learning behavior,learning motivation and learning confidence.Teaching and singing English songs can improve students’ oral English.Through the comparative analysis of students’ speaking test scores,it is found that students’ oral English has improved in pronunciation,intonation and vocabulary and fluency of topic expression.And the significance of this study is to explore the feasibility of the application of English songs in rural junior middle school English classroom,and to provide references for oral English teaching and learning for both rural teachers and students in their future teaching methods and learning methods.
