A Report On The E-C Translation Of Who Can You Trust?(Excerpts):Translation Of Parentheses In The Informative Text

This report is based on the E-C translation of Who Can You Trust?,an informative text written by Rachel Botsman and published in 2017.Chapter two and three are selected as the translation materials,which mainly introduce the breakdown of institutional trust and the three key conditions of building trust.In light of the main purpose of transmitting information,informative texts prefer to pay more attention to the objectivity and accuracy of language expression.Therefore,Newmark’s Communicative Translation Theory is chosen to be the guiding theory in the process of translation,in order to bring the target readers the same reading experience as the original readers.In the process of the translation,it is found that there are various parentheses in the source text,which creates lots of challenges during the translation process.As a relatively independent sentence component inverted into sentence,parentheses,which can consist of words,phrases or sentences,cause difficulty in the understanding and translation of the source text.Therefore,the translator hopes to gain some experience for future translation practice,and provide references for other translators through the analysis of parentheses translation.According to grammatical function,the parentheses in the text will be divided into three categories,including the parentheses as adverbial,appositive and attributive,and three translation methods are adopted to render them,including preposition(putting parentheses at the beginning of the sentence and putting parentheses before the modified words),post-position and linear translation.
