| The translation report is based on Hack your anxiety, which is an informative text published in 2018.The writer Alica.H.Clark,who works as a psychologist, introduces strategies to anxious people and teaches them how to make anxiety work for them in life and all that they do.The first three chapters are chosen as translation material, mainly talking about the various types of anxiety today,as well as the methods of promoting life qualities. In the process of translation, the translator finds that there are various parentheses in the source text. It’s commonly known that parentheses stand for a quite common linguistic phenomenon in English, which usually serves as a word, phrase or clause inserted into a passage to express the meaning of addition, explanation, conclusion, etc.Due to the distinctions between Chinese and English in terms of structure and expression, the target texts may be unreadable if only literal translation is applied. The source text Hack your anxiety includes more than sixty parentheses, which create challenges in the aspects of comprehension and Chinese expression,so the translator does researches on the translation strategies of parentheses.Apart from paying attention to the style of the target text, the translator still focuses on accurately expressing information of the source text.In this way, based on Skopos Theory and its three rules put forward by Hans Vermeer, the translator adopts four strategies, including restructuring the sentence order, translating parentheses with brackets, division and addition. All of these strategies are conducive to achieving fluency and readability. The translator expects that this report can provide references to translation researches and practice of parentheses in the informative texts. |
