| As one of the most important skills of cultivating students’ English learning and application ability,English reading plays an important role in improving students’ English proficiency.Cultivating and upgrading students’ reading proficiency is now the top priority of English teaching in high schools.The General High School English Curriculum Standards(2017 Edition)formally puts forward the concept of the perspective of activity-based English learning,which advocates that effective learning activities should be designed and implemented to enable students to internalize knowledge,integrate skills and develop analytical and problem-solving skills.In contrast,in today’s English reading teaching,problems such as patterning,superficiality and fragmentation still exist,which are still insufficient for stimulating students’ reading interest and improve their reading ability.Therefore,this study attempts to solve those current problems by a tentative teaching experimental research in which the activity-based English learning is applied to the design and implementation of high school English reading teaching.Through the teaching experiment based on designing and executing in reading classes three types of learning activities,namely the learning and understanding activities,the application and practice activities,and the transfer and innovation activities,this study explores the following two research questions:(1)What impacts does reading teaching based on the activity-based English learning have on students’ reading interest?(2)What impacts does reading teaching based on the activity-based English learning have on the development of students’ reading ability?To answer the two questions,106 students from two natural classes in the first grade of a senior high school in Ping dingshan City were used as experimental subjects.During the 16-week teaching experiment,reading teaching based on the activity-based English learning is carried out in the experimental class,while the control class is taught in the traditional way without the learning activities advocated in the curriculum.The experimental data is collected through research tools such as English reading comprehension test,questionnaires,interview,and SPSS 25.0 software is used for statistical analysis of the experimental data.The results of the study showed that students’ reading scores in both the experimental and control classes improved after a period of teaching.However,the experimental class has made great progress,which shows that the English reading teaching based on the activity-based English learning has a positive effect on improving students’ English reading ability.The pre-test and post-test results of the questionnaire and interview also show that there is a significant decrease in students’ negative attitude towards English reading,and the interest in English reading also grows significantly.In learning and understanding activities,the creation of learning situation and introduction of background knowledge greatly stimulates students’ interest in reading.In application and practice activities,students can actively construct knowledge and express their views and opinions.In transfer and innovation activities,students apply their knowledge to real-life situations and improve their overall language skills to a great extent.In addition,regarding the application of activity-based English learning in high school English reading teaching,the researcher also puts forward targeted teaching suggestions and aims to provide certain reference for the in-depth implementation of perspective of activity-based English learning and subsequent research. |
