A Translation Report On Fashion And Body Aesthetics(Excerpts)

This paper is a translation practice report based on a Chinese book Fashion and body Aesthetics.The translator’s work covers section 2 and 3 of chapter 1 which focuses on fashion and body aesthetics in modern and contemporary China.By displaying the phenomenon of Chinese dress culture in the 20 th century,these sections introduce the changes of body concept.The report is divided into six parts:Introduction,Task Description,Analysis of the Source Text,Process Description,Case Analysis and Summary.The first part gives a brief account of the report.The second part introduces the background and significance of this practice.The third part mainly analyzes the source text from three aspects: text type,language characteristics and cultural characteristics.The fourth part mainly introduces pre-task preparation and post-translation verification.The fifth part,also the focus of this translation report,mainly describes the difficulties and countermeasures encountered in the translation,and gives detailed examples to analyze and summarize the specific translation methods and skills.The last part is the author’s summary and prospect of this work.The report is based on the text type theory of Buhler,Reiss and Newmark.According to it,text can be divided into three categories: expressive text,informative text and operative text.Informational text is characterized by strong logic,with an emphasis on content,presentation of facts,transmission of information knowledge and thoughts.The excerpt is mainly an informational textHowever,the text type theory does not specifically introduce how to translate informational text.Therefore,the translator takes the translation strategies of Reiss’ theory as the macro guidance,and combines the specific translation skills learned in the postgraduate stage to translate the excerpted texts.The main principles of translation are as follows: accuracy,objectivity,logicality and integrity.The translation skills are as follows: conversion,extension and deduction of words;reorganization,addition,deletion and statement conversion at the syntactic level;at the textual level,there are thematic consistency,stylistic consistency,methodological consistency.Translation skills are the extension of translation principles and strategies,which are determined by the text type.They are combined at the macro and micro levels to guide translation practice.
