English reading is one of the important lesson types in junior middle school English teaching,and it is responsible for the important task of language input.Reading not only allows learners to acquire a lot of knowledge,but also can improves learners’ language application ability.Scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of researches on the English reading teaching and found many problems.Generally speaking,the traditional English reading teaching pays attention to the teacher as the center and ignores the subjective initiative of the students.As a result,the English foundation of junior middle school students is relatively weak.Most students are not very motivated to learn English reading.Relatively speaking,the inquiry teaching which focuses on student-centered has the advantages of stimulating innovative thinking and cultivating spirit of inquiry.It allows students to participate in the process of knowledge construction,stimulates students’ curiosity and interest in learning,and thus enhances students’ learning enthusiasm.There are many teaching models in inquiry teaching.This article applies the 5E model to junior middle school English reading teaching.The 5E model divides the learning process into five closely related stages,namely,engagement,exploration,explanation,elaboration and evaluation.In order to verify the effectiveness of the 5E model in improving the English reading achievements of junior middle school students and changing their learning attitudes,this study took 90 students from two classes in grade eight of Lanzhou 45 th Middle School as the research participants.One semester teaching experiment was carried out in the second semester of 2020,which mainly studied the following two questions:(1)What are the effects of 5E model of inquiry teaching on students’ English reading achievements?(2)What are the effects of 5E model of inquiry teaching on student’s attitude towards English reading?In this teaching experiment,the traditional PWP teaching model was used in the control class,and the5 E model of inquiry teaching was used in the experimental class.The research tools are English reading test papers,questionnaires and interview.After the experiment,the data is collected,and SPSS 24 is used for statistical analysis of the collected data.The experimental results show that although the students’ reading achievements of the two classes have improved to a certain extent after the experiment,the English reading achievements of the experimental class taught by the 5E model are significantly higher than those of the control class.And in the later stage of the experiment,the students’ enthusiasm in participating in English reading classroom activities of the experimental class is significantly higher than that in the early stage,and they have a more positive attitude towards English reading.Therefore,it is concluded that the5 E model of inquiry teaching can improve students’ English reading achievements and it has a positive effect on students’ attitude towards English reading.
