Reading is the main content of English teaching in junior middle school.At present,the traditional English reading teaching methods seldom think about the text theme,the design of teaching activities is disordered and fragmented,which is not conducive to the cultivation of students’ core English literacy and good reading habits.Junior middle school English teachers should innovate the teaching methods,and explore the teaching practice of English reading based on theme meaning inquiry.By sorting out the domestic and foreign researches on the theme meaning inquiry in second language learning and English reading,this study conducts an action research on the application of theme meaning inquiry in English reading teaching in junior middle schools on the basis of Input Hypothesis Theory,English Learning Activity Theory and Constructivism Theory.This paper mainly has the following two questions to research :(1)How do teachers design English reading teaching activities to guide students to explore the theme meaning?(2)What is the application effect of theme meaning inquiry in English reading teaching in junior middle schools?This research mainly adopts two research methods: questionnaire and interview.With55 students from class A,grade 3,A middle school in Chengwu County,Heze,Shandong Province as the research objects,A 16-week research on English reading teaching action in junior middle school based on theme meaning inquiry was carried out.This action research is divided into the preparation stage,the first stage of implementation and the second stage of implementation.In the preparation stage,problems are discovered,analyzed,confirmed and plans are made;in the second stage of implementation,plans,implementation,data record sorting,analysis and reflection are made.The final analysis and discussion results show that :(1)Teachers should focus on the design of English reading teaching activities by exploring the theme and meaning,rationally allocate teaching activities’ time,rationally use learning and understanding activities,application and practice activities,and transfer and innovation activities.(2)The teaching of junior middle school English reading based on theme meaning inquiry has a positive impact on the core literacy and reading habits of students as a whole,but does not have a positive impact on the cultural consciousness of the core literacy and the reading frequency of reading habits.
