A Report On C-E Translation Of Technical Specifications For Dry Farming In Dingxi City(Chapter 1-2)

Technical Specification of Dry Farming in Dingxi City is a manual on planting technology of different kinds of Chinese herbs compiled by the Agricultural Bureau of Dingxi City.The manual suggests that as a rich origin of Chinese herbal medicine,Dingxi city of Gansu province,should plant different kinds of Chinese herbal medicine in a scientific and effective way and the agricultural workers there should accurately promote the related planting technology to enhance the market competitiveness of the products of herbal medicine in Gansu province and consequently provide more scientific and constructive suggestions for the further economic development of Gansu province.It is hoped that the international popularity of TCM as the quintessence of Chinese culture will be promoted as well.Under the guidance of translation variation theory put forward by Huang Zhonglian,the translator chooses to translate the first two chapters of the manual,exploring and analyzing the characteristics and difficulties in the translation of exposition of agricultural science and technology.This report falls into five parts.The first part is the introduction of background information and research significance.And the next body of the report shows the description of the translation task(source text)from three levels,namely lexical,syntactic and textual analysis,and the specific requirements from the entrusting party.The content of the third part mostly is the performance of the whole translation process,including the inquiry of background information,the determination of translation aids,the selection and description of guiding theory and the proofreading of the translation process.The fourth part is case analysis,through ample examples,it demonstrates the integrated application of addition,subtraction,combination and adaptation and some translation techniques to the solution of the difficulties encountered in translation,which include translation of technical terms,translation of verbs,translation of non-subject sentences and diffusive sentences,etc.The last part is the conclusion,which covers the translator’s personal reflections on the translation report,the shortcomings and translation experience.This translation report aims to summarize some translation experience gained from the translation of the texts on agricultural science and technology with an aim to render some help to the future translation of similar text types.Meanwhile,translators also find that her professional ability needs to be strengthened and relevant background knowledge needs to be further supplemented when dealing with the translation of scientific texts.Further study and more practice are needed for the translator to become well-qualified for the translation career.
