The source text is excerpted from the Journal of Hydrology, which involves many various professional theses such as hydrology analysis, geological prospecting and so on.This source text includes five major sampling methodologies, ranging from different in-situ wireline samplers to producing pumps and the U-tube and discusses their advantages and drawbacks in the light of three important applications, deep groundwater research, unconventional geothermal exploration, and carbon storage. These sampling methodologies are advanced in the field of sampling and thus,it is of practical significance to translate this source text.Under the guidance of the Skopos theory, the difficulties during the process of translation are tackled. This thesis is mainly involving three chapters: Chapter one focuses on the reasons and significances of this source text;Chapter two isolates theory and background information preparations before the translation and in Chapter three, the translation methodologies are presented from three levels—lexical levels, syntactic level, and discourse level. At the lexical level, literal translation, amplification and conversion have been analyzed;at the syntactic level, the translator discusses some passive voice and long and complex sentences;at the discourse level, the translator discusses logical structures and cohesive devices that are used in the translation.Besides, the translator has a deeper understanding of the scientific translation during polishing the translation for several times. And the translator summarizes the translation methods and strategies of similar texts.Meanwhile, the translator also hopes that these experiences will be useful for petroleum scientific translation.
