Coherence In The Post-editing Of English Confucianism Text

This translation practice report is based on post-editing of machine translation.The selected machine translation system is SYSTRAN.The translated text comes from the book Confucian Ethics in Western Discourse’s first chapter,mainly introducing the characteristics of Confucian ethics.This text is an academic text,with specialized knowledge,precise words and many complex sentences.Because of the differences in language expression habits between Chinese and English,it is difficult for SYSTRAN system to achieve coherence in translation.Therefore,how to achieve coherence in machine translation and ensure the accuracy of information transmission across languages has become the focus of this translation practice.According to Halliday and Hassan’s Cohesion in English and other scholars’ relevant theories,combined with the classification of SYSTRAN machine translation problems,this report analyzes how to improve the coherence of machine translation from four aspects: grammatical coherence,semantic coherence,textual coherence and other coherence in post-editing.For grammatical coherence,this report mainly discusses how to achieve coherence in post-editing in terms of three types of coherence: reference,substitution and connection.For semantic coherence,it focuses on vocabulary and sentence.For discourse coherence,it mainly analyzes the realization of post-editing coherence in terms of logical coherence and stylistic coherence.For other aspects of coherence,it mainly fouces on punctuation marks.And the author explores the deep coherence relationship in text by analyzing representative examples,and adopts translation techniques such as omission,conversion and merging to realize the coherence in post-editing.I hope this translation practice report can make more people pay attention to the application of machine translation and provide some references for post-editing practice.
