| With the exchange and development of linguistics among countries, many scholars have a deep research on Chinese discourse. The Routledge Handbook of Chinese Discourse Analysis was compiled by translation scholar and linguist Chris Shei. The handbook shows the latest research achievements in the field of Chinese discourse analysis, consolidating the existing research findings. The handbook collects forty-four English academic papers written by leading scholars from all over the world.Through translating this book, the author finds that, scholars are good at using non-predicate verb structures to make the sentence easier. In Chinese, there is no non-predicate verb structure.Since the non-predicate verb structures can act as different components and play different roles at the level of phrase, clause and sentence,it is necessary to take into account its functions and components and to translate them accurately and concisely by the translation strategies of adjusting structure.Catford proposed that Translation Shift is the departure of form correspondence in the process of moving from the source language to the target language. He divided Translation Shift into two categories: Level-shifts and Category-shifts,and further divided Category-shifts into Structure-shifts,Class-shifts,Unit-shifts and Intra-system-shifts.Among them,Structure-shifts is the most commonly used in translation.Under the guidance of Catford’s Structure-shifts Theory, this paper discusses the translation of non-predicate verb structures from three levels: phrase, clause and sentence. The paper has five parts. The first part expounds the development of Chinese discourse research in recent years, the content and breakthrough significance of The Routledge Handbook of Chinese Discourse Analysis. The second part describes the translation process. In the third part, the development of Translation Shift Theory is firstly described. Then, this part expounds Catford’s Shift Theory through the case study and pays more attention to the applicability of Structure-shifts in guiding the translation of non-predicate verb structures.According to the Structure-shifts Theory, the fourth part discusses the translation methods of non-predicate verb structures. In the last part, the author reexplains the way to find the problem, and summarizes the translation methods of non-predicate verb structures.By translating this collection, the author’s translation ability has also been improved. In addition, the author also learned a lot of knowledge about modern Chinese, which enriched the knowledge of Chinese. As for translated material, the Chinese version facilitates Chinese readers to have a better understanding of the latest research findings, provides information resources for scholars, and thus strengthens the communication between China and other countries in the field of discourse analysis. |
