A Report On The E-C Translation Of Sci-tech Text Under The Guidance Of Translation Shifts Theory

With the continuous progress of globalization,exchanges among countries in the field of science and technology have become more frequent.In the continuous exchanges of science and technology,the importance of English for science and technology has become increasingly prominent.The content of science and technology English involves many fields,such as 3D printing,medical pharmacy,aerospace,water conservancy and hydropower,and environmental chemistry,etc.Among them,the translation of literature related to electrochemical technology can help Chinese scholars understand the current status of foreign electrochemical technology development and better promote our country’s foreign exchanges in the field of electrochemical technology.Translation research in this field can better serve relevant translators and provide references for their scientific and technological translation work.The original text of this translation report is selected from chapter 14,chapter 15 and chapter16 of the original version Electrochemical Water and Wastewater Treatment.This thesis uses Catford’s translation shifts theory to guide translation practice and solves problems in translation practice,including the translation of nouns and plural nouns,the shifts of words and tenses under the guidance of level shifts and the shifts between parts of speech;the shifts between passive and active sentences,and the shifts between clauses and sentences under the guidance of category shifts.The translator adopts literal translation,division and addition in the translation to conform to the core idea of translation shifts theory which accurately conveys the content rather than pays attention to the consistency of form.In this research,we found that Catford’s translation shifts theory emphasizes that content is more important than form.Translation shifts theory have extremely high requirements for accurately conveying text content,and it is suitable for the translation of scientific and technological texts,and has an excellent guidance on the quality of translated content.And Catford’s translation shifts theory applies the functional grammar system to translation studies,which has strong practicability.According to the translation shifts theory,when it comes to translating long and difficult sentences,translator can divide them into several short sentences.Therefore a large number of translation techniques can be used,such as division and addition,which can improve the accuracy of translation.
