| With the ongoing progress of the world’s scientific and technological level and the accelerated development of global economic integration,scientific and technological exchanges between countries are becoming increasingly frequent.As a tool of communication,translation is very important in this context.This report selects mechan ical engineering texts from EST texts as the source text for translation,with the aim of conveying scientific and technological information and promoting communication and development.Catford’s translation shifts theory divides the phenomenon of "shift" in the process of translation into "level shift" and "category shift"."Category shift" includes four types:"stmcture shift","unit shift","category shift",and "intralsystem shift".Catford’s translation shifts theory is highly operable for the translation of mechanical engineering texts that emphasize content over form.The source text,Steam Turbine Generator and Aux.Systems,comes from the translation project of R Translation Company.This source text focuses on the supply and service scope,special technical requirements,and auxiliary systems of steam turbine generators,which has strong practical implication.Guided by Catford’s translation shifts theory,this report uses the case analysis method to conduct translation research.Level shift is main ly used to analyze the shift of tenses,singular and plural forms.Structure shift is commonly used to analyze the shift case analysis method to conduct translation research.Level shift is mainly used to analyze the shift of tenses,singular and plural forms.Structure shift is commonly used to analyze the shift between English subject prominence and Chinese topic prominence,the shift between active and passive sentences,and the shift between affirmative and negative sentences.Unit shift includes the shift between vocabulary,phrases,clauses,and sentences.Category shift is common at the lexical level,such as the shift between nouns,verbs,adjectives,etc.Intra-system shift is required when terms in the source language have no corresponding expressions in the target language. |
