Interpreter’s Subjectivity:a Report Of A Field Consecutive Interpreting

Interpreting is an important language communication tool in intercultural and cross-language communication.Since the rise of economic globalization,there has been more and more cooperation and communication among countries.Exchanges among people with various cultural backgrounds and different languages can be seen every moment.Interpreting,as a cross-language communication tool,is playing an increasingly crucial role.Consecutive interpreting,one of the main types of interpreting,is obviously indispensable in such communication.Translation is not merely a simple “one-to-one transfer” between two different languages,but a creative process.Scholars began paying more and more attention to the subjectivity of the translator;as a result,translator’s subjectivity steadily became a popular subject of research.As a form of oral translation,interpreting is the same as translation regarding subjectivity in general.By observing how interpreters understand and explicate the speaker’s speech,as well as the interpreting strategies they adopt to complete the interpreting,we can observe how subjectivity informs the entire interpreting process.Obviously,understanding and maneuvering interpreter’s subjectivity can dramatically promote interpreting quality.Based on consecutive interpreting data gathered from the author’s own field work,this report tries to analyze what sort of factors influence interpreter’s subjectivity as well as what sort of role interpreter’s subjectivity plays in guaranteeing high-quality interpreting.This report aims to help other interpreters improve their interpreting and provide materials for research on interpreter’s subjectivity.
