The translator selects the English-Chinese translation of Chapter 8 “How to Calculate Earth’s Maximum Carrying Capacity” in A Planet of 3 Billion by Christopher Tucker as the analyzing text of this practice report. Its purpose is to study the translation methods and skills adopted in the translation of technical texts under the guidance of Skopos Theory.Skopos Theory holds that the whole translation activity is determined by the purpose of the translation. Therefore, translation is a purposeful and fruitful act based on the original text.In the process of translation, there are a series of rules that translators should follow, especially the three principles of Skopos Theory, namely, the principle of purpose, the principle of coherence, and the principle of faithfulness. This book is the technical text, which involves the translation of many professional terms and long and difficult sentences.Besides, based on the characteristics of integrity, abstraction and objectivity of technical texts,it is required that the expressions of translated texts should be accurate in terms and closely linked logically. To achieve this effect, the translator always bears the three principles of Skopos Theory in her mind, carefully chooses appropriate translation methods when translating at different levels. At the lexical level, she adopts translation methods such as semantic extension, annotation, and conversion of part of speech to ensure the accuracy of word meaning. At the syntactical level, she employs splitting, focus permutation, conversion of voice, and omission to make the translation smooth in expression and faithful to the original information. At the textual level, amplification in logic, omission in logic, and reconstruction are adopted to clarify the clear logic between paragraphs. The translator hopes that through the translation of the book, she will conduct deeper research on the translation skills and methods of texts with science and technology themes under the guidance of the three principles of Skopos Theory. In addition,in the process of translation, the translation of long and difficult sentences,as well as the handling of the problems such as how to achieve the smooth translation, all of these works have improved the translator’s translation ability to a certain extent, laid a solid foundation for future translation practice and provided a reference for the translation of similar texts.
