For the personnel engaged in education,they should not only have strong critical thinking,but also teach each child critical thinking in the process of teaching,so that they can solve problems with ease and then improve their learning ability.In the foreign researches,most scholars combine critical thinking with daily teaching,and influence the students’ thinking subtly.The research shows that the cultivation of critical thinking can help students improve their ability in reading English.However,this thinking has not received its due attention in English education in China,and the implementation effect of the school curriculum is poor.In the process of research,this paper uses the empirical research method,starting from the deep understanding of critical thinking and critical reading,and combining with critical reading strategies,aiming to answer three questions :(1)How to cultivate students’ critical thinking ability in high school English reading teaching?(2)How can teachers apply critical reading strategies to develop students’ critical thinking ability?(3)After the teaching experiment,have the students’ critical thinking ability improved?This research was conducted among 98 senior two students in a middle school in Wanzhou,to explore the cultivation of critical thinking in English reading classes.It adopted a research design of “pre-treatment test—treatment—post-treatment test”.Before and after the treatment,the students attended the California Critical Thinking Skills Test.During the treatment,the students were guided through the following stages in each reading class: 1)guess the topic;2)develop the deeper understanding of the reading material;3)discuss in groups;4)evaluate and make their voice heard.After the treatment,the two classes were tested again on scale and critical reading.Finally,the author collects,compares and analyzes the relevant data collected during the experiment.In the experimental group,the overall abilities of critical thinking were improved.In the process of reading,they were able to use analysis,comparison,reasoning,questioning and other ways to improve their understanding of the article.Then gradually develop good critical thinking.The results of this study fully indicate that the cultivation of critical thinking ability can promote students’ critical reading ability.The analysis of the test scores showed that there was an overall as well as individual increase in students’ scores of critical thinking.It suggests that it is feasible to integrate the cultivation of critical thinking in English reading classes,and that the students can benefit from such cultivation.This study provides the basis in theory and practice for the English teachers to improve critical reading teaching,and provides reference for the study of the related English teaching,but due to my ability and knowledge is limited,in the process of the research,there are still some imperfections in the teaching practice need to be improved in the future.
