| English Curriculum Standards for High School(2017 Edition,2020 Revision)has put forward four key competencies as the key goals for English teaching.And they are the correct values,necessary characters and key abilities formed by students through English learning.The four key competencies of English include: language abilities,cultural awareness,thinking qualities and learning abilities.English learning as a language learning,reading ability is one of the most basic abilities of communication.Wang Qiang(2015)reading teaching is the main way to cultivate students’ English key competencies.High school education in rural area is one of the most important ways to consolidate the achievements of poverty alleviation and block the inter-generational transmission of poverty.Therefore,the cultivation of key competencies in English reading teaching is worth studying,especially for rural high school.This paper adopts questionnaire survey,interview and case teaching method to research on 150 senior high school students,13 senior high school English teachers and 63 senior high school students of class 7,grade 1 in a high school in Kaizhou District,Chongqing rural area,based on Bloom’s cognitive educational goal theory and humanistic education theory,combined with the English key competencies requirements.In order to find out the problems and put forward the strategies,this research attempts to answer the following three questions:1.What is the current cultivation situation of the key competencies in English reading teaching of high school in rural area? What are the major problems?2.What are the strategies to solve the problems of cultivating students’ key competencies in English reading teaching of high school in rural area?3.How effective is the implementation of the teaching strategies of English reading teaching to cultivate the key competencies of rural high school students?Through the questionnaire survey with students and teachers and interviews with teachers in the early stage,this paper finds that the major problem of cultivating the English key competencies of high school students in rural area is the lack of cultivation of students’ thinking qualities and learning abilities.Based on literature review,Bloom’s cognitive educational goal theory and humanistic education theory,this paper further summarizes the following reading teaching strategies:(1)stimulating students’ interests by creating language situations;(2)using mind-maps to conclude the structure of reading passage;(3)locating the detail information of reading passage;(4)solving problems cooperatively;(5)promoting development of students by transferring and innovating;(6)summarizing and cultivating students’ key competencies.The strategies are tested,combined with the teaching case and the effectiveness of the strategies is tested through the students’ after-classes self-evaluation questionnaire survey.This research aims to provide some reference strategies for the English reading teaching to cultivate the English key competencies of high school students in rural area,and hopes to attract people’s attention to the high school education in rural area and the cultivation of students’ English key competencies. |
