Translation law, written by Deborah Cao,is the outcome of the author’s years of experience in the realm of legal translation in different legal systems under multilingual backgrounds. This book presents a systematic interpretation of legal translation from three aspects, namely, law, language and translation. It not only discusses many problems in the realm of legal translation as well as corresponding solutions, but also provides suggestions for legal translators to improve their professional competence and the quality of their work.It is undoubtedly a masterpiece tailored for legal translators.Besides, since there is no Chinese version of this book, the translator chooses Chapter Three and Four for translation practice.Furthermore, the third chapter centers on the legal translator, with the emphasis on the translation competence and proficiency of legal translators. And the author also establishes a model of translation competence for further demonstration;the core of Chapter Four lies in the terminological issues in legal translation, focusing on the equivalence and difference of legal concepts in different legal systems, legal system-bound usages, the ordinary meaning and legal meaning of terms, and terminological issues caused by linguistic and legal uncertainty. This report explores the translation conundrums in Chapter Three and Four at the lexical and syntactic levels under the guidance of four “information bridges” proposed by Zhao, the “bridge” of linguistic convention in particular.Through the translation, the translator finds that in-depth analysis at the lexical and syntactic levels will help translators comprehend the text better.Furthermore, accuracy and uncertainty coexist in legal contexts.Legal translators should be faithful to legal texts and remains neutral rather than makes their own interpretations in the translation.
