A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of On Marriage Life And Rights In China (Excerpts)

This report is based on the Chinese-English translation of On Marriage Life and Rights in China(Excerpts),which is a legal scholarly work.The translator firstly gives a translation task description,and then divides the whole translation procedures into three parts: pre-translation,translation process and post translation.Through the relevant case analysis,the main translation difficulties facing the translator in this translation process and the corresponding solutions are as follows: at the lexical level,translation of legal terms and some individual phrases are mainly included,and the corresponding solutions mainly include: using functional equivalents through consulting authoritative legal dictionaries such as Black’s Law Dictionary and adopting the English translation of some terms or words used in authoritative legal documents;As for the translation of some non-equivalent words,the translator uses the translation techniques of free translation,explanation and even literal translation after correctly understanding the meaning of these original words.At the syntactic level,the translator mainly needs to translate some quotations and sentences in the source text.Although some quotations have been translated into Chinese,it is known that their original version can be found directly in those books published in the target language-countries.Therefore,the corresponding solution is to find the corresponding sentences in the target-language books and use them directly without translation.For the translation of some sentences in the source text,the translator mainly adopts the translation techniques of division,combination and so on.The translator also introduces the relevant translation theories and translation strategies to guide this translation project.Finally,by taking my time to reflect on and evaluate this translation process as well as some typical cases,this written report looks at three aspects in translation projects of such texts: how to ensure quality and arrange schedules through pre-translation and quality control,how to improve the translator’s own competency in the area of legal translation,and how to rethink our translation task and broaden experience.
