The quality of automobile text translation will determine the popularity of automobile products in overseas markets to a certain degree.China has made tremendous achievements in automobile industry since the 21 st century.Chinese automobile manufacturers continuously spare no efforts to extend overseas markets.China has a large amount of import volume in automobile in the past decades,which leads to a fact that what we can see in automobile text translation are more about English-Chinese translated texts.However,it is necessary to do a good job in the Chinese-English translation of automobile texts so as to popularize automobiles made by China in overseas markets.Hence,based on his months of translation practice in the company,the author selects a maintenance manual with 13,000 words as the source text and tries to analyze the translation techniques feasible for automobile text translation with the guidance of New Mark’s Communicative Translation Theory.The theory put forward by Newmark,a prominent British scholar,refers to the principle that in translation,a translator should try at best to offer target language readers the effect that is almost the same as the one that is offered to source language readers by the source text.The theory is always integrated with some other translation theories of Newmark for application.The first is Semantic Translation.The application of Communicative Translation will make the text simple and fluent,and therefore convenient for comprehension,which is applicable particularly for the translation of general texts like automobile instructions.The other is the relationship between text types and translation methods.Automobile text belongs to Informative and Vocative Text Types,and thus is suitable for guidance of the source text translation.There are three research methods used in the essay: literature research method,comparative research method,and case research method.First,the initial translation of the source text is implemented,and during the translation,the automobile text characteristics are summarized,some literatures are referred so as to analyze what kinds of translation theories and techniques are relevant to and appropriate for the research.Next,the essay will make a research and analysis on the feasibility of Communicative Translation for the guidance of the text type translation.Last but not least,in the analysis of the cases,based on the Communicative Translation Theory,the author adopts different translation methods and techniques,makes a study on the three aspects,say vocabulary,sentence and text,and therefore acquire a most reasonable translated text through comparison.The translation methods are mainly as zero translation,literal translation and liberal translation.In translation practice,the applied techniques are as follows: for vocabulary,word conversion(like nominalization structure),word formation(like affix,compounds,abbreviations)are adopted to make vocabulary explicit and comprehensible.For sentence,amplification,omission,word order conversion,voice conversion are adopted to make the translated text become in accordance with English language expression.For text,amplification,omission,sentence restructuring,the maintenance of uniformity of terminology and expression are adopted to keep the translated text logical and fluent.
