Edward Hopper(1882-1967)is a well-known representative of realist painters in the history of American modern art.His works mainly depict common life scenes in the United States in the 20 th century,and incorporate his own life feelings and thinking into it.So as to give the work profound spiritual connotation.At the same time,this unique method of creation has also aroused strong resonance from viewers.On the one hand,Hopper extended the boundaries of his topic selection to the various social life.On the other hand,he extended his artistic depth to the human soul and the good and evil of human nature.He observes and interprets the United States with a strong sensitivity.Life,so his works will be recognized as a portrayal of the United States.The article focuses on the metaphorical content in Hopper’s oil paintings.Through the clarification of the metaphorical concept,a series of metaphorical image symbols are interpreted,and the reasons for the formation of the metaphorical content are analyzed.The aesthetic value of the metaphorical works is also discussed.This clarifies the national identity and critical realism tendency of Hopper’s art,and thus affirms the value of its art.Finally,the theoretical achievements are incorporated into the author’s creation,and metaphorically conveys to the viewer the special emotions belonging to this era.
