Light and shadow have a unique role and position in oil paintings.Today,when easel painting is still active,we can examine the light and shadow in paintings from a unique perspective and way of thinking.Edward Hopper was an American urban realist painter in the 20 th century,known by later generations as "the director of light and shadow".Hopper’s light and shadow are timeless,he said: "I just want to paint the light on one side of the room".In his works,light and shadow are the elements of painting and the subject of painting.This paper mainly analyzes and discusses the influence of the urban room theme and light and shadow expression language in Edward Hopper’s artistic paintings on the author’s painting style.How to find creative expressions in different eras and backgrounds,through study and discussion,the author realizes: young painting creators analyze the works of art predecessors,and ask questions from them,why do artists love this theme? What does the artist want to convey,and how does the graphic language help him express himself? While answering and solving these questions,I connected with my own paintings to sort out and think.While questioning and answering artists,we must constantly ask ourselves.Through this questioning,we can clarify our creative context and find the creative expression that best matches our personal characteristics.The article is divided into four chapters for exposition: the first chapter mainly discusses the purpose and value of this subject,as well as the innovation;the second chapter mainly starts from the artist’s painting form language,and explores the social environment and personal growth experience to Hopper.The subject of the room in the painting,the influence of light and shadow composition and emotional connotation;the third chapter mainly expounds the specific influence of Hopper on the author’s painting creation,and lays the groundwork for the author’s oil painting creation;the fourth chapter mainly discusses the specific effect of the author’s painting creation Practical process and summary.
