A Report On C-E Translation Of In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Device Instructions

With the development of science and technology in China and the globalization of world economy,the domestic products are pouring into the international market.As a new emerging industry,medical device occupies an important position in the international market and plays an important role in China’s foreign economic development.For the sake of an important place on the global market,manufacturers have made great efforts to provide excellent quality of medical device as well as the high quality of instructions translation.This report selects In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Device Instructions of company B as the source text and conducts the translation practice under the guidance of Newmark’s text typology.The core of Newmark’s text typology is to adopt different translation strategies according to different text types.The medical device instructions(MDI)is a special text type,which contains many professional terms,nominal phrases,compound sentences,etc.Having analyzing the characteristics of the source text,the translator deems that the instructions belongs to an informative text with both informative and vocative functions.Therefore,the translator adopts the translation strategies of semantic translation and communicative translation.Semantic translation is to translate the meaning of the original text accurately and try to retain the features of the original text to the greatest extent.However,the purpose of communicative translation is to make TL more readable and more acceptable for target readers.The combination of semantic translation and communicative translation can not only preserve the linguistic features of the original text,but also meet the reading habits of users.This report consists of five parts.The first chapter is an overview of the the translation task,including the introduction,preparations and translation process of the translation task.In the second chapter,it is an analysis of the source text,including the text source and language features of source text.In chapter three,Newmark’s text typology is introduced and its applicability to the MDI translation together with translation principles is explored.In chapter Four,the translator explores the MDI translation strategies from the aspects of vocabulary,syntax and text.The last chapter is a conclusion,in which the author summarizes the major gains of the study and the experience gained in MDI translation,presents the limitations of the study and make some suggestions for the further study.The results of translation report show that different text type should choose the corresponding translation strategies in the translation process,which can help to achieve the unity of contents and form between the source text and the target text,thus improving the quality of the translation.Finally,the translator summarizes the translation experience,which not only standardizes the translation process and improves the translator’s translation ability,but also provides new ideas for the MDI translation,which is of great significance to promote the sales of medical devices in the international market and enhance the exchange of international advanced medical technology.
