David Alexander Colville’s works have become more and more well-known in China in recent years, and more and more scholars have been evaluating and interpreting his works. After the Second World War,his artistic style gradually matured, and he made his presence felt in the Canadian art scene. His works mainly focus on family relationships and the natural environment but differ from traditional figurative realistic paintings. His images are not only artisanal and rigorous but also have a strong metaphorical quality through the specific objects depicted. This paper analyzes Colville’s works from the perspective of iconography on several levels. The first chapter is the introduction, which focuses on the background of the research on Colville in China and abroad, and explains the research method, content, and scope of my research in this paper. Then followed by a description of the current state of research at home and abroad, and finally, the academic significance of Colville’s study. The second chapter elaborates and explains the theoretical principles of pictorialism and the pictorial representation of Colville’s works, which is the first level of the pictorial approach. In this chapter, representative works of Colville from different periods are selected for content description and interpretation.Chapter 3,this chapter is the pictorial representation of Colville.Explaining the forms of pictorial metaphors and the specific metaphorical contents in Colville’s works,a part of the artistic images in Colville’s works has a particular specific pointing meaning, which is of great research value. In chapter four, this chapter delves into Colville’s pictorial metaphors, using the third layer of pictorial methods to analyze and study Colville’s specific works. The pictorial images in his works, the structure of the images, are not merely narrative expressions, but the arrangement of various figures and animals in the images have their deeper pictorial consciousness and the meaning behind the stories. The artist uses many different artistic techniques to build up Colville’s unique artistic style and the deeper pictorial meanings in his images.Chapter 5,through the study of the pictorial metaphors in Colville’s works,we search for a suitable method of creation. Our in-depth exploration of the deeper meanings and stories in Colville’s works in this dimension of iconography allows us to interpret Colville’s paintings more not only precisely but also repeatedly reminds us to keep thinking about how we can use the scenes of things around us to think deeply and apply them in our own creations and bring valuable metaphorical qualities into our creations.
