A Report On The Chinese Translation Of "Syntactic Aspects Of Poetry: A Pragmatic Perspective"

This thesis is an English-Chinese translation report.The source text is adapted from an English academic paper published by Dr.Khalil Hassan Nofal in the International Journal of Business and Social Science in September 2011: Syntactic Aspects of Poetry: A Pragmatic Perspective.This text belongs to the research work of poetry language characteristics.Its main content is to enumerate many examples of poetry to analyze and conclude the syntactic features of poetry from three aspects: namely the types of poetic language deviation,rhetorical devices and stylistic changes,in order to draw conclusions about the linguistics features of poetry.This translation report consists of five parts: Chapter One is the introduction of translation tasks.Chapter Two is the translation process.Chapter Three is the theoretical perspective of translation studies.How to translate under the guidance of semantic translation and communicative translation theory.Chapter Four is the case studies,which explore the problems encountered in the process of translation combined with the translation theory.Chapter Five is the summary of this translation practice.Through this translation practice and case analysis,the translator tries to summarize the following conclusions.Firstly,in the translation of terminology,the existing terminology translation conventions should be followed.If there is no ready-made translation,semantic translation and communicative translation should be combined to fully express the meaning of the source text and enable readers to understand the meaning expressed.Secondly,poetry is full of rhythm,and its grammatical structure is different from the general English grammar.It has its own unique way of expression.In addition,poetry often conveys emotion through image and sentence structure,so it is very important to maintain the original style and semantics of poetry.Therefore,semantic translation should be adopted in translation of poetry to preserve its syntactic structure.Thirdly,the text is an academic paper on the study of poetry.When translating the author’s analytical sentence of the poem,it is necessary to combine its writing characteristics.Under the guidance of communicative translation,the language expressive function of the translated text should be given full play to facilitate domestic scholars to understand the research point of view in the text.
