A Report On An E-C Translation Of State Of War(Excerpts)

This translation report is based on the translation practice of a novel named State of War(excerpted)written by Ninotchka Rosca,in which the compression of multifarious colonial history is marked through the delineation of the scattered family sagas surrounding the three major characters whose stories are connected,not by a conscious tracing of family genealogy.The excerpted parts are from chapter one of part one-The Book of Acts,chapter two of part two-The Book of Numbers,and the last chapter of part three-The Book of Revelations.This report is carried out under the guidance of the theory of translation variants proposed by Professor Huang Zhonglian.He points out that this theory aims at using adaptation,such as explanation,reduction,edition,summary,imitation and so on to meet the specific requirements of the readers under certain conditions.With the help of the theory,the author reproduced the style of the original text by preserving the style of the novel at maximum by applying edition,adaption and other translation methods.Meanwhile,from the perspective of culture,the author finished the translation practice and studied the translation of Philippine culture in the novel,as well as the translation of the cultural combination of the Philippines,the United States and other countries in order to highlight the style and characteristics of this novel.This can both provide references for the translation of texts related to Philippine culture and provide references for the translation of Southeast Asian American novels through the study of the translation of mixed cultures.
