With the continuous deepening of the new curriculum reform and quality education,English reading has always been an important means of English learning and an important form of language input. However,in junior high school English reading teaching, conventional teaching methods are still prevalent, and textbooks,as the only reading teaching materials, can no longer meet the requirements of the new English curriculum standards. Therefore,it is very important to solve the problem of how to use the learning strategies of English newspapers and periodicals to improve students’ English reading ability.Based on schema theory and learning strategies, this study conducted a 4-month empirical study on 94 eighth-grade junior high school students in a foreign language school in A City.Through teacher interviews, questionnaires, test papers and students’ reflection logs,it explores the effectiveness and feasibility of English newspapers to assist eighth-grade English reading ability. The research is divided into three stages: pre-test stage, test implementation stage and post-test stage.Through comparative analysis of pre-test and post-test data, and through reading students’ learning reflection logs, observe whether students’ English reading ability and students’ thinking quality have improved, give corresponding teaching suggestions, and explore the following two questions:1.How effective is the application of learning strategies in newspaper reading teaching?2.In the teaching of newspaper reading, what are the teaching and learning suggestions for improving students’ English reading ability? The experimental results show that the cognitive introduction of English newspaper reading before class, the dual-subject regulation teaching in class, and the creative communicative learning after class based on schema theory and learning strategies can improve students’ reading interest and improve students’ English reading ability.
